Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, 4-bay, L-plan house with corner tower and picturesque bargeboards. Tooled coursed granite with stugged dressings. Timber eaves course; pierced bargeboards.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; architraved doorway to penultimate bay to right, panelled timber door flanked by timber pilasters and leaded glass panels, stained glass fanlight reading "St. Lesmo Tower", 3 stone steps to door; canted 3-light window with battered base to ground floor of bay to outer right; window to penultimate bay to left; bipartite window set in gable to outer right of 1st floor; window set in gable to penultimate bay to right and penultimate bay to left of 1st floor; octagonal tower to bay to outer left, 5 windows to ground and 1st floors, spire with cast-iron weathervane.

E ELEVATION: asymmetrical; single bay with 2-bay addition to right; window off-centre to right of ground and 1st floors; regular fenestration to ground and 1st floors of addition.

N ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-bay; bay to left obscured by addition, 3-boarded timber doors to ground floor, 2 at right with glazed panel; boarded timber door to ground floor of right return, window to centre of 1st floor; bipartite window to 1st floor of bay to right.

W ELEVATION: asymmetrical; single bay; window off-centre to left of ground and 1st floors; tower to outer left (see above).

Predominantly small-pane upper sash with plate glass lower sash windows. Graded purple-grey slate roof with lead ridge. Corniced gablehead stacks and coped wallhead stack, circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: rubble boundary wall to S and E with rubble coping. Stugged, square-plan granite gatepiers to centre of S wall with corniced necks and square caps; walls swept down to broad opening to left of W wall.

Statement of Special Interest

St Lesmo was supposedly a holy hermit who lived in Glen Tanar, and introduced Christianity to the area. Hence also St Lesmo's chapel on the Glen Tanar estate (see separate listing).
