Summary

Description

Probably George Truefitt, dated 1889. Single storey and attic, square-plan lodge to Aboyne Castle. Rough-faced, squared and snecked pink and grey granite finely finished to margins. Long and short quoins; sloping cills; relieving arches to ground floor openings; rope-moulded eaves cornice.

SE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; bipartite window off-centre to right and to bay to left of ground floor, flat-arched opening with column support to outer angle at right; window breaking eaves off-centre to right of attic floor with tooled ivy pediment.

NE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 4-bay; advanced flue breaking eaves to penultimate bay to right with carved shield of William Cunliffe Brookes; 2 flat-arched openings to bays to left of ground floor; window to breaking eaves to left of attic floor with carved ivy pediment; circular-plan engaged tower to outer right with window to ground floor and tripartite window to 1st floor, with stepped rope hood mould, boarded timber door to re-entrant angle to left.

NW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 3-bay; 2 flat-arched openings to centre and right bays of ground floor; tower to bay to left with doorway to re-entrant angle to right; small window to bay to right of attic floor.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; small 4-pane window off-centre to left of ground floor; flat-arched openings to outer left of ground floor surmounted by tooled panel bearing "H" of Huntly surmounted by crown; bipartite window breaking eaves with piend roof to bay to right of attic floor.

Predominantly 6-pane timber casement windows. Piended graded grey slate roof with lead flashings. Coped, shouldered granite wallhead stacks, that to SE with "1889" datestone, with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

GATES, GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: 2 pairs of finely finished square-plan, corniced granite gatepiers to W and E of lodge bearing carved "H" of Huntly surmounted by crown within rope moulded roundel. 2-leaf ironwork gates. Rough-faced coped boundary walls to SE, S and W, adjoining boundary walls of Bydand (see separate listing).

Statement of Special Interest

A-Group with Mains of Aboyne, Home Farm, West Lodge, Walled Garden, Allach Bridge and Ice House. This lodge replaced Bydand (see separate listing), which lies to the W. From the tower of the South Lodge the gatekeeper could see along 3 principal roads to and from the castle.
