Description

Later 18th century. W facing single storey house with

dormerless attic, 3 bays with centre door; slightly later

wings to rear forming U-plan court. Early 19th century

2-storey, 3-bay house added to N gable of 1st house; all

harled with stone margins.

Early 19th century house with centre door (S elevation),

window above, and in left bay, ground and 1st floors;

symmetrical fenestration N elevation, 3 large ground and 1st

floor windows; 2 windows each floor S gable (1 blind in each

floor).

Most 12-pane glazing survives.

Pair pigeon flight holes in each E gable of older portion;

end stacks; Tomintoul slate roof, piended on early 19th

century wing.

INTERIOR: original 3-bay house has panelled box-beds in right

(S) room and original panelled doors; small centre stair

framed by narrow wooden reeded pilasters and segmental headed

arch. Tomintoul stone flagged floors. Original doorpieces in

early 19th century portion.

Coped rubble walled garden with central square rubble

gatepiers.

Statement of Special Interest

Home of Gordons of Croughly. Originally known as the Laggan,

with earlier Croughly further upstream on the Conglass Water.

James Gordon of Croughly built part of the existing house

after marriage (1760); Robert Gordon (1780-1828) "was last to

reside at old house" and "moved to new house, enlarged it" at

time of his parents' death, circa 1812. John Gordon (son of

Robert), last of line to live at Croughly where he was born

1818, and died, 1843.

Croughly noted in NSA as one of 4 farms in parish with

"commodious and substantial" dwelling houses and steadings

built "within last 20 years".
