Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies on the S bank of Colliston Burn in arable farmland at around 50m OD. It comprises a sub-rectangular enclosure defined by a ditch 4-6m wide and measuring some 60m ENE-WSW by 20m. It has a well-defined entrance towards the E end of the S side. Diffuse cropmarks within the enclosure hint at the possibility of surviving internal buildings.

Although the surrounding area is rich in the remains of prehistoric settlement and economic activity, this is one of the few enclosed sites in the area. The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is irregular on plan with maximum dimensions of 95m NE-SW by 75m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. The importance of the site is greatly enhanced by its association with the wider landscape of prehistoric settlement in this part of the Lunan Valley.
