Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of a burial cairn of prehistoric date, visible as a stony mound.

The monument lies in heather moorland at around 270m OD. It comprises the remains of a cairn measuring about 11m in diameter and up to 0.4m high. A ruined shelter or shooting butt measuring about 1m high has been constructed on the cairn. Two large kerbstones are visible, one on the SE, the other on the W side. Cairns of this type are burial monuments dating to the Neolithic and Bronze Age, and may be expected to contain at least one burial as well as material relating to their mode of construction and use.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 35m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to an understanding of prehistoric ritual and burial practices.
